Florida Photos

August 2004

Our Florida vacation was cut short by Hurricane Charley, but we did get one real tourist day in before we had to leave. Here are the pictures to prove it.

We spent most of the day at Homosassa Springs State Park. The site was once an exotic animal park but since the state took over, the focus has changed to native species. The old hippo, now over forty years old, remains and has been given honorary Florida citizenship so that he can be considered a native.

The spring area is the temporary home of healing manatees. There is also a "fish bowl," an underwater observatory for seeing the native fish species. The fish in the collage is a snook.

A large area of the park is devoted to Florida's birds.

On the same day, we went by the ruins of the Yulee Sugar Mill.
