“Work” has become a polluted word. Most people equate work with the necessary job they must undertake to get money. So when I say sailing is the hardest work you’ll ever do, you may misunderstand me. You might mistakenly think that sailing is that job you hate so much. If you do, however, choose to try the sailing, you’ll learn just how rewarding good work can be. Work can become your motivation for life.
If you venture out on a long sailing adventure, you’ll work hard every day, often getting no more than four hours of sleep at a time. You’ll push your body, your mind, and your fears to the edge, and you’ll come back stronger for it.
It can be difficult to start sailing if you have don’t experience or a boat. Here are some ways you can start to sail.
Join a Crew
There are sites online that allow you to find a crew that needs help. These crews welcome newcomers. There are a lot of options to choose from. Some ships are transporting cargo. Other ships are taking some rich family out on vacation. No matter what you choose, you will have an interesting and unique experiences.
You can also find work at sailing schools around the world. Some of these places offer room and board in their countries for help with their schools. This won’t get you around the world right away, but it will give you great sailing experience that you can use to get a better position on a crew.
Volunteer on a Research Vessel
There are many research vessels that need volunteers to help them with their expeditions. Research vessels are often focused on conservation issues and need up-to-date statistics on marine life. Your role may be minor to begin, but there are great opportunities if you stick with the vessel.
Make Your Own Way
Secondhand sailboats can go for cheap. Go in on one with a couple friends and practice at a nearby lake. If you can afford it, move up to a bigger sailboat and practice so you and your friends can go out on your own. This option is the most expensive and can be very time-consuming, but it can easily be one of the greatest things you do in your life.
